Subject: Legislative action
Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008

HOUSE:

Yesterday the House Judiciary Committee met to discuss and vote on 10 immigration bills. Overall it was a very positive meeting even though many bills got a favorable report. There was a lot of discussion on the constitutionality of some of the bills and possible discriminatory effects of other bills. It was evident that some Representatives were unwilling to rush into creating potential troublesome law.

HB 727 – Favorable report
HB 664 – Favorable report (6-5 vote)
HB 666 – Favorable report
HB 667 – Favorable report
HB 298 – Favorable report (lengthy discussion of bill) (amendment added)
HB 303 – Favorable Report (amendment offered)
HB 163 – Favorable report (substitute bill)
HB 720 – Carried Over (this is the same as Beason’s senate bill) (9-2 vote)

** Now the bills that were issued a favorable report move on to the House floor.

I encourage each of you to write, call or email to voice your opinion or concerns to any of the following people (the chairman being the most important):

Rules Committee Members:
Ken Guin (Chairman) – 334.242.7674
James Buskey (Vice Chair) – 334.242.7757
Ron Johnson, Barbara Boyd, Craig Ford, Blaine Galliher, Todd Greeson, Randy Hinshaw, Richard Laird, Jack Page, Arthur Payne, John Robinson, Rod Scott, Pebblin Warren, Cam Ward

SENATE:
Sen. Beason’s SB 426 received a favorable report out of committee (unanimous vote – only Sen. Singleton was absent). It now is due to be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor. Any amendments to the bill will be entertained at that time. However, Senator Lowell Barron is the Chairman of the Rule Committee. He has the power to never let this bill grace the Senate floor. I recommend that he be amongst your calls/e-mails/letters opposing this bill!

Assuming that the bill receives a majority vote (of the 35 Senators) from the Senate floor – it changes houses and repeats the process in the House (committee, then house floor). But remember, Rep. Treadway filed an identical bill in the House – HB 720 (that was part of the public hearing today in the Judy committee).
